Welcome to Band!

I am beyond excited to begin making music with your child and teaching them the finer skills of musicianship and instrument technique. This time is crucial in your child's music education! Learning an instrument comes much easier to developing children and teenagers as their musical growth and development parallels with their personal growth and development. Meaningful music-making is one of the very few activities that utilizes the entire brain all at once. Thank you for allowing me to guide your child during this important time!

I teach all of my students that being in band is like being on an athletic team. I encourage teamwork, strong work ethicdiscipline, and control - all traits that cultivate a successful team and successful individuals! However, in band, every member is vital at any given time. There are no backups, second strings, or alternates. Each person is needed every rep, play, and practice so that we can be successful as a team on the marching band field, at assessment, on stage, at competitions, and anywhere we showcase our talents to the public. These lessons learned in band will serve your child well in and out of band class for the entirety of their lives!

Please feel free to contact me at jlykins@rcps.info or 540.853.2251 with any questions.

This will be a memorable year for the Breckinridge Majors!
